Chat limit reached: why it happens and what to do

Every model can hold only so much of a conversation. At 85% the app warns you, at 92% the chat stops accepting messages and you continue in a new chat.

What you see

When a chat gets long, the app shows two messages in turn.

  • The warning “This chat is almost full. Start a new chat soon.” You can keep writing for now.

  • The window “Chat limit reached” with the text “This chat is too long to continue safely. Start a new chat to keep going.” and two buttons, Stay here and New chat.

After the second message this chat no longer accepts new messages. Stay here keeps you in the chat so you can read it and copy what you need, but the AI will not answer in it. To continue, tap New chat.

Why a chat has a limit

With every message the model rereads the whole chat: your messages, its answers, attached files and, in a project, the knowledge base items set to “Always in context”. This amount is called context, and each model can hold a limited amount of it. The warning appears at 85% of the model's context, and the chat is blocked at 92%.

Long files fill the context fastest: a PDF book, a long transcript, dozens of photos. A long chat also costs more: each new answer is more expensive because the model reads more text.

How to see how full the chat is

As the chat grows, a badge appears next to the message field, for example “48/272K”: how much context is used and how much this model holds. Tap it to see the details: Used, Permanent (the knowledge base part that is always included) and the model.

How to continue the conversation in a new chat

  1. When you see the warning, ask the AI in the same chat: “Write a short summary of our conversation so I can continue in a new chat”.

  2. Copy the summary with Copy under the message.

  3. Tap the new chat icon at the top, or ⋮ → New chat.

  4. Paste the summary into the first message and continue.

If the chat is already blocked, start a new chat and write: “Find my chat about … and continue from where we stopped”. The AI searches your past chats by itself. The facts it remembers about you are also available in every new chat, see memory and chat history.

The old chat is not deleted when you start a new one. It stays in Chat history, within the history limit: without Premium only the last 3 chats are kept.

When to start a new chat without waiting for the limit

  • You are switching to a different topic. The old conversation only gets in the way and makes answers more expensive.

  • The AI starts confusing details from the beginning of the chat.

  • You have attached large files and no longer need them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I export the whole chat?

There is no export of a whole chat. Copy messages one by one with the Copy button, or ask the AI to put the important parts into one message or a file.

Is the limit the same for every model?

No. Each model holds a different amount of context; the badge next to the message field shows the limit of the current model.
