Voice cloning failed or the clone doesn't sound like you
The Failed badge usually means too few tokens for MiniMax or a dropped connection. A clone that sounds off usually comes from noise or other voices in the sample.

What you see when cloning fails
In My Voices the voice gets the red Failed badge, and a message pops up at the top: "Voice cloning failed:" followed by the voice name and the reason. The reason is also shown when you tap the three dots next to the voice.
If the app refused the recording before saving, with a message like "Recording is too short" or "File is too large", the voice wasn't created at all. Those messages are listed in how to clone your voice.
Why cloning failed and what to do
A failed voice can't be restarted. In every case below, delete it (three dots → Delete) and save the recording again after fixing the cause.
Not enough tokens for a MiniMax voice
The reason reads "Customer balance is not enough to perform the transaction". The message is in English in every app language. A MiniMax voice needs at least 180 tokens on the balance, and nothing was charged.
If you want MiniMax, top up the balance to 180 tokens or more: see how to buy tokens.
If price matters more, save the same recording with Qwen 3. It costs about 1 token.
With a zero balance the app doesn't start cloning and offers to top up right away.
The connection dropped or the server didn't answer
The reason reads "Failed to clone voice. Please try again." or "Job timed out after server restart". If the voice was MiniMax, the 180 tokens have already been returned. Check your internet connection and save the recording again.
The provider found no speech in the recording
The reason is a technical message in English that starts with "MiniMax cloneVoice error". It usually means the recording is silent, too quiet, or contains only music or noise. Record again closer to the microphone, in a quiet room. The 180 tokens are returned.
An old MiniMax voice stopped working
The reason reads "This voice is no longer available on MiniMax. Open Settings → My Voices to re-clone it." This happens with MiniMax voices created long ago that were removed on the MiniMax side. Delete the voice and create it again from the same or a new recording.
If the clone doesn't sound like you
The clone repeats the sample, so almost always the cause is in the recording. Find your case:
| What you hear | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Echo, hum, metallic sound | The room echoes or something was running in the background | Record in a small room with soft furniture, with the TV and fan off |
| The voice is someone else's or "average" | The sample has two people or a call recording | Use a recording where only you speak, made with the phone's microphone |
| A strong accent in another language | The sample is in one language and the text in another | Record a sample in the language you voice |
| Flat or too emotional voice | You read the sample in that manner | Record again the way you want the result to sound |
| Still not like you | The provider doesn't suit this voice | Save the same recording with the other provider: Qwen 3 costs about 1 token |
A voice can't be retrained, only made anew. Recording advice: how to record a sample so the clone sounds like you.
If the voice is wrong in Translate audio
Translate audio can clone the voice from the file being translated. That clone needs at least 3 seconds of speech for Qwen 3 and 10 seconds for MiniMax. With a shorter file the app shows "Audio is too short for the selected provider, switched to ElevenLabs", and the translation is read by a standard ElevenLabs voice instead of the speaker's voice.
To always hear your own voice, choose a saved voice in the settings: Voiceover → MiniMax or Qwen 3 → My MiniMax voice or My Qwen voice. More about voices in translations: Translate audio settings.
